Been a while since we posted a newsletter, but I wanted to share that this lovely film by Scottish filmmaker, Lizzie Mackenzie, is now screening. The Hermit of Treig is now available in select theaters worldwide. The film’s byline is:
For the past four decades, Ken Smith has lived alone in the Scottish Highlands. His home is a log cabin nestled near Loch Treig, known as "the lonely loch." Ken has no electricity or running water — he lives off the land, fishes for his supper, chops wood, and even brews his own alcohol. Filmed over 10 years, director Lizzie Mackenzie poetically captures Ken's profound, spiritual relationship with the wilderness.
As Ken likes to say, “if you love the land, it loves you back.”
Now in his 70s, Ken reflects upon the reasons he turned his back on society, the vulnerability of old age, and the wonder of a life lived in nature in this humorous, transcendent and life-affirming BAFTA Award-winning feature documentary.
This is a beautiful, artful film made with so much care. It not only captures the wisdom of an elder who has lived a full, incredible life, but also allows us to step into the beautiful, tender relationship between Ken and Lizzie. This film captures the tension between freedom and civilization with heart and earnestness. It’s clear that this piece of art has been a labor of love, attention, and connection. It really is a lovely film, and we’re happy to be sharing it with you all!

A Little Update from Us
Progress on our next short film is going well! We’ve had some unexpected delays, but we’re persisting. Unfortunately, this past week Jake broke his collarbone and will need surgery, so there’s another unexpected delay as he learns how to edit with only one hand. We’ll continue releasing interviews on our YouTube channel and sharing them here. It sounds trivial, but a subscribe on YouTube is a great, free way to support our work! The way monetization on YouTube works is you need 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours in order to start earning money through the platform.
If every one of our subscribers on here subscribed and watched “What is the Human Animal?” we’d be able to start earning ad revenue, which would be a dream come true!
So if you’d like to support us, but don’t have the means, this is a great way to help us. Thank you in advance for your support!
I am on the search of a way to watch this movie. I hope the surgery goes well and that you post more soon. It is good to have an intelligent, mindful voice to listen to in our current world. With gratitude. India
